What's the difference between SSL and TLS encryption?

During the last years the exchange of data on world wide web has increased rapidly so the necessity to provide your business and users with the highest level of protection online. The use of SSL Certificates guarantees the protection of data exchanged on the internet.

SSL (Secure Socket Layer) and TLS (Transport Level Security) are two encryption protocols used in telecommunications and computer science to guarantee the secure exchange of sensitive data (such as personal informations and method of payments), avoiding third parties to read or modify informations exchanged between two systems, such as a client and a server or two servers.

The acronym SSL refers to a standard technology while TLS represents its more advanced, secure and modern version. They are two versions of the same protocol making communications secure, using symmetrical and asymmetrical encryption.

Usually, when we talk about cyber security, we also refer to HTTPS (Hyper Text Transfer Protocol Secure). You can see it in the URL of a website protected by SSL Certificate. By clicking on the lock icon in the browser's search bar, you will be able to check all the certificate's details such as the issuing Authority and the website owner's company name.
