Classification of domain extensions (TLD)

The domains extensions or TLD can be classified in the following way:

  1. Generic extensions (gTLD or generic top-level domains):
They provide both individuals and organizations with the possibility to use a specific extension to identify the area of interest of a website. They are usually composed by three letters and can be used worldwide with no limit of nationality or territory. The use of the extensions is not so strict like it was in the past. This means that actually there's a complete freedom in using extensions. For example the extension .com, was usually used to identify a commercial website, now it's the most popular extension on the web and is used by many activities with no commercial background. Other popular generic extensions can be .info, for information websites, .net , generic extension referring to the "net" or .org used by non-governative organizations.
  2. Dedicated Extensions:
They concern specific areas of interest or category of products or services and can be registered only by a limited number of subjects. Such as, for example, .aereo for transport industry or .asia for companies and individuals operating in Asia and in the Pacific area or .biz "business" extension used for sales purposes and so on.
  3. Geographic extensions (ccTLD or country code top-level domains):
They are composed by two letters and usually represent nations or geographic areas. For example, the extension .it represents Italy, .fr France, etc. They are used by States or territories depending on States.
